SXSWTF

I love Austin, and I hate crowds.  So I’m feeling a little torn about the upcoming shit-show that will be South by South West 2012, AKA Music Biz Spring Break.  I feel like every where I look and go, it’ll be what my dad always referred to as “feeding time at the zoo“.  On the bright side, we’ve got a bunch of day parties and showcases to play.  We put off going for the first 5 years of the band since we didn’t want to get lost in the shuffle.  But since things have really been on the up and up, I think we’re in a good place to do this.  And we’re very fortunate that our benign label overlords at Bloodshot took care of getting us into the fest and finding us a hotel.  They did their part, now we have to do ours: kick ass when we’re on stage (9 shows and counting), and make friends when we’re off.  If that all goes smoothly (cross fingers, word on the street is that there’s no shortage of free booze), we can kick things up a notch and keep touring, recording, living the dream, etc.

I’ve got old friends in Austin, my wife & I went there on our honeymoon, I love swimming at Barton Springs, Shiner Bock is my beer of choice, I love migas tacos for breakfast, we’re escaping Chicago winter’s end-game, and after Austin, we head to Vegas for a week at the Cosmopolitan.  How can anything possibly go wrong?  – BT

Who Will Buy These Memories?

25 02 2012

Times being what they are, and since we’re not home alot, BT is making the tough move of thinning the herd a little and putting a few of his beloved Fender basses up for sale.  Rather than deal with the anonymity (and hassle) of Ebay, we’re checking to see if any there are any players here interested in bringing a little piece of Uptown home with them.

Home?!?!

27 01 2012

We just got home from two weeks on the road with JJ Grey & Mofro, covering a nice chunk of the Midwest into Appalachia.  We’re now home for 6 whole weeks, the longest I’ve been home since early September.  Since Labor Day, we’ve played 55 shows in 4 countries and 21 states.

Five months ago, I had a full-time job at Playboy Magazine and a very pregnant sister-in-law.  Now I’ve got a song on WXRT and a nephew.  And this mustache.

Highlights of the “Want More” tour thus far…

Reading Is Fundamental

10 04 2011

In case you haven’t heard, the Uptown Sound is getting ready to take another flying leap into the next project.  We’re the narrator/protagonist and house band for Bailiwick Chicago’s production of the Tony Award-winning musical “Passing Strange”.  You can read all about it here or get tickets over there, but while I had a second to breathe before we start tech week with the cast, followed by a week of dress rehearsals and previews, I was thinking about how much easier this whole endeavor was made by my ability to read music.  Kevin too.  Both of us have played in rock bands for 20 years, but before that we were playing in the school band.
