It’s almost here, the Uptown Sound is making our Canadian debut next week. It’s been less than 3 years since our first show, and we’re actually going international with this raw power soul, July 16-18.
“Canada?”, you say, “Hmm, that sounds exciting. Where at? Toronto? Montreal?” No no, that would be too easy. Vancouver would be nice, work in a little visit to Seattle and Portland while we’re out there, but nope, that ain’t how it’s gonna go. The Uptown Sound has been invited to play the Dawson City Music Festival in fabulous Dawson City, Yukon Territory.
We don’t really know what to expect, except that we’re doing mainstage sets on Friday and Saturday nights, and the promoter told us the town is like Deadwood, a real wild west frontier kind of place. And our friends in the Bell Orchestre said it was the coolest gig they every played.
We’re trying not to think about it too much (I’ve found that going through life without any expectations leads to more pleasant surprises and less bitter disappointments), but we’re hoping for some good music under the midnight sun and dreading a bunch of mosquitoes. Chicago expat (and AACM stalwart) Matana Roberts just got added to the bill, and I’m very excited to check out one of the best-named bands we’ve ever shared a bill with (right up there with Lasers + Fast + Shit), Sasquatch Prom Date:
So in order to share this little corner of the world with y’all, we’re going to post some souvenirs. The first five
people to email us their name and address (theuptownsound AT yahoo DOT com) will get a pretty picture postcard from the Great White North, Way Far North Division. So get cracking with that correspondence and we’ll see you on the other side! (And don’t worry, we’re too lazy to snail-spam you)
